Wiliam Charles "Bill" Hay (born December 8, 1935 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player (center) who played for the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League from 1959 to 1967 . In 2015 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

Career

In 1955, Hay reached the final series of the Memorial Cup with the Regina Pats , but lost with his team. He then moved to Colorado College and was one of the most successful players in the US university league in the following years .

He returned to Canada in 1958 and signed his first professional contract with the Calgary Stampeders in the Western Hockey League . There he got 54 scorer points in 53 games. The Chicago Black Hawks were interested in him and acquired the rights to him from the Montréal Canadiens . In his first season in 1959/60 he was able to convince in the NHL. Together with Bobby Hull and Murray Balfour , he formed the so-called "Million Dollar Line" . He was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie and took part in the NHL All-Star Game at the beginning of the following season . His red hair also earned him the nickname "Red" .

In his sophomore year in Chicago, he helped the Black Hawks win the Stanley Cup . Until the 1965/66 season , he always got double-digit values ​​for goals and assists. In 1967 he ended his active career. So he didn't help the St. Louis Blues , who picked him in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft .

After his NHL career, he returned to Calgary and worked there for Bow Valley Resource Services Ltd. He was a member of the selection committee of the Hockey Hall of Fame , in 1974 his father Charles Hay , a distinguished functionary, was inducted . Bill Hays uncle Earl Miller had played in the NHL from 1927 to 1933 for the Black Hawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs .

In June 2015, Hay was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame , which he had previously served as President for several years.
