Francis "Frank" McCool (born October 27, 1918 in Calgary , Alberta ; † May 20, 1973 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1944 to 1946 .

Career

Frank McCool began his career as an ice hockey goalkeeper in his hometown of Calgary, where he played for a few smaller teams before playing for the Gonzaga University team from 1939 to 1942 . For the 1942/43 season McCool returned to Calgary to play for the Calgary Currie Army , before he suspended the war in the following season with the ice hockey.

On October 25, 1944, the Canadian received a contract as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , with whom he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in his first season . In addition, the goalie received the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie . In the finals against the Detroit Red Wings , McCool set an NHL record with three shutouts at the beginning of the best-of-seven series, which is still there.

In his second NHL season, McCool came on 22 missions before he had to end his career due to illness at the age of 28. After a long illness, he finally died in 1973 at the age of 54.
