Daniel Hans Alfredsson (born December 11, 1972 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played for the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings in 1370 games in the National Hockey League as the right winger during his active career between 1992 and 2014 has denied. In the 18 years that he spent with the Ottawa Senators, he set there among other things the records for most games, goals, assists and scorer points.
Daniel Alfredsson is also a member of the Executive Committee of the National Hockey League Players' Association and an athlete ambassador for Right to Play .
Career
Alfredsson learned to play ice hockey at Göteborgs IK . In 1990 he moved to IF Mölndal Hockey for two seasons before he joined Västra Frölunda HC in the Elitserien at the age of 20 . This is where the NHL became aware of him. In the 1994 NHL Entry Draft , the Ottawa Senators secured the rights to Alfredsson in the sixth round in 133rd place.
Ottawa Senators (1995-2013)
Alfredsson, now 22, did not go to Canada until the 1995/96 season . In his first season he scored 61 points scorer. For this he was the second Swede ever to receive the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best newcomer. In his second season he increased to 71 points, but could no longer build on these performances in the three following seasons, also due to injury breaks. In the summer of 1997, Alfredsson and the Senators could not agree on a contract, so the Swede initially missed the beginning of the season. In October 1997, the two parties finally agreed on a four-year contract with an average salary of $ 3.5 million. At the end of the season he also suffered an ankle injury and played only 55 games in the 1997/98 regular season . In the play-offs, the Senators were eliminated in the second round against the Washington Capitals , Alfredsson scored a total of eleven goals in the play-offs.
The following season was again marked by injuries for Alfredsson, so the Swede had to pause for a total of 24 games, which was also noticeable in the performance of the other games. The attacker was only able to contribute eleven goals in the main round and one goal during the play-offs. For the 1999/2000 season , the right-handed shooter was appointed to succeed Alexei Yashin as the new team captain . Overall, the season for the Swede was more successful than the previous two years, with 59 points scored. Despite Jaschin's return a little later, the captaincy remained with Alfredsson, who in the 2000/01 season completed his best-ever season in the NHL with 24 goals and 46 assists. In the play-offs, however, the Ottawa Senators team disappointed again when, as in the previous year, they were eliminated by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Alfredsson was only able to mark one goal in four games against the Leafs . In the 2001/02 season , the Swede was able to increase his points statistics again, so that at the end of the main round he was 71 points scorer. In the play-offs, the Sens met the Maple Leafs for the third time in a row, to which they were again subject to Alfredsson's good performance.
In the run-up to the 2002/03 season, The Senators extended his contract by two years. With the Senators he even reached the Eastern Conference final this time, where they had to admit defeat to the later Stanley Cup winner New Jersey Devils . In the 2003/04 season Alfredsson came for the second time in a row to a total of 78 scorer points within the main round and extended his contract during the current season for another five years. Alfredsson bridged the lockout during the 2004/05 season in Europe at his former club Frölunda HC in Sweden, where he won the Swedish championship with the team and was instrumental in winning the title with 30 scorer points in the play-offs. For the 2005/06 season , the striker returned to the Senators and formed with Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza one of the strongest attack lines in the NHL. The overall season should be the most successful in Alfredsson's active career, he scored 43 goals and contributed 60 assists. In particular, the game against the Buffalo Sabers in November 2005 is considered to be one of the best of his career, with four goals and two assists in the game. In view of the performance in the main round, the play-offs for the Swede were only moderately successful with ten scorer points in ten games.
After an equally weak start to the season in the 2006/07 season , Alfredsson was able to build on his earlier offensive performances with a series of six games in a row, each with at least one scorer point. In December 2006, he reached his 600th career point in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers . In the play-offs, Alfredsson's performance was an important factor in the Senators' entry into the Stanley Cup final, where his team was defeated by the Anaheim Ducks . In the 2007/08 season he scored a total of seven points scorer in the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning in January 2008, which no player in the Ottawa Senators' jersey had ever achieved before. At the end of the season Alfredsson had to struggle with injuries, so that he also missed the start of the play-offs. In April 2008, he returned to the Senators roster four weeks ahead of schedule, playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins on the series . At the beginning of the 2008-09 season , the Swede and the Senators agreed on a four-year contract extension with a reported total salary of US $ 21.6 million and a no-movement clause, since at that time he expressed a desire to end his career in End Ottawa. In the run-up to the following season, Alfredsson became the longest active captain of an NHL team after other long-time captains such as Saku Koivu of the Montreal Canadiens and Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche changed clubs or announced their retirement.
In the 2009/10 season Alfredsson made his 1000th game in the National Hockey League in April 2010. In the play-offs, the Senators were eliminated in the first round against the Pittsburgh Penguins , the Swede was the team's top scorer with two goals and six assists. Following the season, the attacker said he had been playing with a groin injury since February, justifying his reduced performance towards the end of the regular season and in the play-offs. In the following season, Alfredsson scored the 1000th scorer point of his career in October 2010.
At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he suffered a concussion for the first time in his career as a result of an elbow check by opponent Wojtek Wolski in the game against the New York Rangers . For the upcoming trade deadline, there was speculation about a possible change of Alfredsson to a team with chances for the title, which however did not materialize due to the good sporting situation of the Senators. The Swede was then pleased that he did not have to make the decision to change and thus expressed his long-term connection with the organization. Alfredsson received another recognition for his performance as part of the All-Star Game 2012 when he was allowed to lead one of the two teams as the eponymous captain. After the play-off of his Senators in the first round against the New York Rangers, speculation arose for the first time that the attacker could end his career during the summer break. In July 2012, Alfredsson finally announced that he would be on the ice for the Senators the following season.
Detroit Red Wings
On July 5, 2013, Alfredsson signed a one-year deal worth $ 5.5 million with the Detroit Red Wings . This was not extended in the run-up to the 2014/15 season at Alfredsson's request. He wanted to decide in August and September 2014 whether to end his career or continue it with the Red Wings. In December 2014, he announced that he was retiring due to persistent back problems. At this time he was represented with 1157 scorer points in 51st place on the all-time NHL leaderboard and behind Mats Sundin the Swede with the second most goals and scorer points in the NHL.
International
Alfredsson played in five Olympic Games (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014) for the Swedish national team and was part of the team that won the gold medal in Turin in 2006 . At the 2014 Olympics, he won the silver medal with the Swedish national team.
After the active career
In September 2015, the Ottawa Senators announced that Alfredsson would henceforth act as a consultant for the franchise. In September 2016, he became a Canadian citizen . In December 2017 it was announced that Alfredsson was one of the six new inductees into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2018.
