Wojciech "Wojtek" Wolski (born February 24, 1986 in Zabrze ) is a Polish - Canadian ice hockey player who has been playing for HC Oceláři Třinec in the Czech extra league since December 2019 . At the beginning of his career, the winger played over 400 games for five teams in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Colorado Avalanche , which had selected him in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft in 21st position. He then played for several years in the Continental Hockey League , winning the Gagarin Cup with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in 2016 . Wolski also won the bronze medal with the Canadian national team at the 2018 Winter Olympics .
Career
After his family emigrated to Canada, the 1.91 m tall center began his ice hockey career in the Canadian junior leagues Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League , before finishing 21st in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft the Avalanche was selected ( drafted ). In the Brampton Battalion he was the team's best scorer in the 2005/06 season with 128 points in the regular season and was third in the league behind Rob Schremp and Dave Bolland of the London Knights .
The left-shooter completed his first nine NHL appearances for Colorado at the beginning of the 2005/06 season . Due to the good performance with the Brampton Battalion, the Avalanche brought him back to the team at the start of the playoffs. From the following season he was also part of the Avalanche squad and made his breakthrough in the NHL this season with 50 points in 76 games.
In 2007 Wojtek Wolski was nominated for the YoungStars Game, which was part of the supporting program of the NHL All-Star Game , in which he played for the Western Conference team.
In the following years he was a regular player in Colorado and scored over 40 points in four seasons in a row. On March 3, 2010, he was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter . In January 2011 Wolski was given to the New York Rangers in exchange for Michal Rozsíval . They transferred him to the Florida Panthers shortly before the trade deadline , on February 25, 2012, in exchange for Mike Vernace and a third-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft .
During the lockout, Wolski played in the Polish Ekstraliga for KH Sanok and then moved to the Washington Capitals . After the shortened season, Wolski moved to the Continental Hockey League and played there for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod . For Torpedo he ran in 106 regular season games, in which he collected 42 goals and 39 assists. He also played 12 play-offs for the club and took part in the 2015 KHL All-Star Game . In May 2015 he moved to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk within the KHL , where he received a two-year contract.
Before the 2017/18 season Wolski switched to Kunlun Red Star within the KHL , but returned to Metallurg in December 2017 in exchange for Nich Schaus .
At the Channel One Cup 2017 he made his debut for the Canadian national team in order to recommend himself for the Olympic squad for the Winter Games in Pyeongchang . There he and the team finally won the bronze medal.
In December 2019 he left China and joined the Swiss HC Ambrì-Piotta to take part in the 2019 Spengler Cup . He then moved to HC Oceláři Třinec from the Czech extra league at the end of the year .
