Curtis Shayne "Cujo" Joseph , b. Munro , (* 29. April 1967 in Keswick , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his career for the St. Louis Blues , Edmonton Oilers , Toronto Maple Leafs , Detroit Red Wings , Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League played.
childhood
Curtis Joseph was born to two teenagers. His mother, Wendy Munro, gave him up for adoption a few days after he was born. Jeanne Joseph, a nurse Wendy Munro met during her hospital stay, adopted him with her husband and gave him the first name of their biological father, Curtis Nickle.
He took the surname "Joseph" only after a few years; until then his name was Curtis Shayne Munro.
Career
In his youth he played for the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame and a little later for the University of Wisconsin . Unlike most NHL players, he was not drafted , but signed his first NHL contract with the St. Louis Blues in 1989 as a free agent and within two years he made it to the goalkeeper. In 1994, "Cujo", his nickname, played for the first time in the NHL All-Star Game . In the summer of 1995 he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers and made it to fifth place in the 1997 Vezina Trophy for the season's outstanding goalkeeper.
After his contract expired, Joseph moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1998 . In 1999 and 2000 he was selected for the second and third time for the All-Star Game , but was absent in 1999 due to an injury. After the 1998/99 season he was nominated by the NHLPA players' union for the Lester B. Pearson Award for Outstanding Player of the Season. In 2000 he was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy , which is given to the player with outstanding leadership skills on and off ice and the greatest social commitment. In 2002 he was a member of the Canadian national team, which won the Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City. But he only played one game.
For the 2002/03 season he was committed by the Detroit Red Wings , for which he played two years. After the lockout and the failure of the 2004/05 season , Curtis Joseph signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2005, with whom he missed the playoffs .
During the 2006/07 season he could no longer build on the good performance of previous years and received with Mikael Tellqvist a young competitor for the place in goal, but remained the goalkeeper of the Coyotes, who again could not qualify for the playoffs.
In the summer of 2007, his contract with the Coyotes was not renewed and Joseph could not find a new team, whereupon he paused for half a year before returning to the ice in December 2007 when he was in the squad of Team Canada for the Spengler Cup . With this team he won the tournament in the final against the Russian team Salawat Julajew Ufa . Joseph finally returned to the NHL on January 14, 2008 when he signed a contract with the Calgary Flames .
After the 2008/09 season, which he spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was initially a so-called unrestricted free agent before he decided in January 2010 to end his career.
