Shane Albert Doan (born October 10, 1976 in Halkirk , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger completed during his playing career from 1992 to 2,017 total 1,595 games for the franchise of the Winnipeg Jets and Phoenix / Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League . There he holds the franchise records for most games, goals, assists and scorer points and led the team as team captain for 13 years . With the Canadian national team , Doan was world champion in 2003 and 2007 and won the gold medal at the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 .
Career
Shane Doan began his career as a hockey player with the Kamloops Blazers , for which he was active in the Western Hockey League from 1992 to 1995 . In 1995 he won the Memorial Cup and the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy with the Blazers as the most valuable player in the cup tournament. He was then selected in the first round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft as the seventh player in total by the Winnipeg Jets , where he was the last first round pick of the Jets before they moved to Phoenix . He also got a place in the NHL squad of the Jets immediately after the draft and scored 17 points scorer in his rookie season . He was also named Rookie of the Year for the Winnipeg Jets.
After the franchise moved to Phoenix , he often did not have a permanent place in the team and often had to play for the farm team , the Springfield Falcons from the American Hockey League , in the 1997/98 season . In the following season he belonged again firmly to the Coyotes team and completed a total of 88 season games before he scored more than 20 goals in the regular season for the first time in the 1999/2000 season. He established himself within the team and developed into a leading player in the Coyotes over the next few years, scoring at least 20 goals in each of the following eight seasons. After Teppo Numminen had left the team before the 2003/04 season, Doan was the team's new captain and achieved new personal bests with 27 goals, 41 assists and 68 points. He also received his first invitation to an NHL All-Star Game in 2004 . In February 2004, Doan received a new three-year contract from the Coyotes. Doan did not play ice hockey during the lockout in the 2004/05 season .
In February 2007, Doan received a five-year contract extension. In the 2009/10 season , Doan set a new record with the Coyotes in the regular season and made it into the playoffs with 107 points. In the first round they lost just under seven games against the Detroit Red Wings . In the course of 2011/12 he succeeded in January 2012 when playing against the New York Islanders, the first Hatrick of his NHL career. In September 2012, his contract in Arizona was extended for another four years for a reported total salary of $ 21.2 million. In June 2013, the American became the team captain with the longest active tenure within the NHL by moving from Daniel Alfredsson and led his team on the ice for the tenth year in a row in the subsequent 2013/14 season . Since the beginning of the 2014/15 season , Doan has been the player with the most appearances for the franchise and overtook previous record holder Dale Hawerchuk as the best scorer in franchise history with his 381st goal in December 2015 .
After the end of the 2016/17 season, the Coyotes announced in June 2017 that they would not extend the attacker's expiring contract. Doan left the team as the record holder for the most games (1540), goals (402), assists (570) and points (972) in franchise history. Furthermore, only Gordie Howe , Nicklas Lidström and Alex Delvecchio (all Detroit) completed more games for a single franchise in NHL history . In addition, Doan ended 13 years as team captain, so that he, together with Mario Lemieux and Daniel Alfredsson, is fifth in the ranking of the longest-serving team captains (of a team).
Despite the interest of other teams, he announced his retirement from active professional sport at the end of August 2017. At that point, the Canadian was the last active NHL player to appear for the original Winnipeg Jets.
International
Doan made his debut for Team Canada at the 1999 World Cup in Norway , where this finished fourth. Four years later he was reassigned to the Canadian national team and won his first gold medal in the 2003 championships in Finland . In 2004 he took part in the World Cup of Hockey and scored the 3-2 winner in the final against the Finnish men's selection . He had previously been nominated for the 2004 World Cup , but was unable to participate due to an injury. At the World Cup a year later in Vienna , Doan was appointed assistant captain of Team Canada and won the silver medal with the selection team.
He was also on the Canadian squad at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , where he scored three points in six games.
At the 2007 World Cup in Moscow , Doan ran as team captain for the first time. Under his leadership, the team won the gold medal, not losing a single game and defeating Finland 4-2 in the tournament final. Doan contributed five goals and five assists to this success, scoring a hat trick in the second round match against Belarus . Even a year later, in the 2008 world championships , Doan retained his captaincy and led his team to the final against Russia , when the Canadians lost 4-5 to the Russians. At the 2009 World Cup in Switzerland , he won another silver medal.
controversy
In the election campaign leading up to the 2006 general election , Doan was accused by member of the House of Commons Denis Coderre of having racially insulted French-speaking linesman Michel Cormier on December 13, 2005 during a game against the Canadiens de Montréal . In a letter, Coderre asked the President of Hockey Canada to reverse Doan's nomination for the 2006 Winter Olympics roster - unless the player publicly apologized. Doan sued Coderre in January 2006 for defamation demanding $ 250,000 in damages (which he would donate to charity). After Cormier confirmed that he had been racially insulted, Coderre responded in April 2007 with a counterclaim for $ 45,000. An out-of-court settlement was reached in August 2010 around a month before the planned trial. Doan announced that the linesman had actually been insulted, but by another player.
