Kevin Hugh Lowe (* 15. April 1959 in Lachute , Quebec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , - coach , and - functionary . The defender played over 1,400 games for the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1979 and 1998 . During this time he won a total of six Stanley Cups , five of them with the Oilers and another in 1994 with the Rangers. With the Canadian national team he won the gold medal at the Canada Cup in 1984 . After his active career, Lowe returned to the Edmonton Oilers and worked for the team as head coach, general manager and president. In 2020, Lowe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
Career
Lowe played during his junior years between 1976 and 1979 in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) with the Remparts de Québec , where he was the first team captain who had grown up English-speaking. After their move from the World Hockey Association (WHA), the Edmonton Oilers secured him with their first draft right in the NHL Entry Draft 1979 in the first round as the 21st place the transfer rights of the junior player.
Right off the bat, the defender made his breakthrough in the NHL for the 1979/80 season . He also scored the first NHL goal in Oilers history. He distinguished himself as a defender both through his strong defensive skills and his good play forward. But above all, his role, which he held on the team outside the ice, made him a particularly valuable part of the Oilers team, which won the Stanley Cup five times by 1990 . He helped the team cope with the departures of stars like Wayne Gretzky , Paul Coffey and Mark Messier .
After 13 years, Lowe also left the Oilers. He switched to the New York Rangers , where he met numerous companions from Edmonton. Up to this time he was also a regular participant in the NHL All-Star Game , in which he was nominated a total of seven times. With the Rangers he was able to win his sixth Stanley Cup in the 1993/94 season . For the 1996/97 season , the Canadian returned to Edmonton. He also started his second season there, but ended his active career after only seven games.
In 1998, Lowe joined the Oilers as an assistant to the coaching staff. The following season he replaced Ron Low as a coach. Through his promotion to General Manager , he succeeded Glen Sather , who had moved to New York to the Rangers. He also worked as general manager for the Canadian national ice hockey team. In this role he was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
In the summer of 2008, Lowe was promoted to President of Hockey Operations for the Oilers, naming Steve Tambellini as his successor to the post of general manager. He held this position until the middle of the 2014/15 season when he was replaced by Peter Chiarelli . In his honor, the LHJMQ introduced the Kevin Lowe trophy for best defensive defender. In 2020, Lowe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
