Career

Kelly Buchberger began his career as a hockey player with the Moose Jaw Warriors , for which he was active in the Western Hockey League from 1984 to 1986 . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 1985 in the ninth round as a total of 188 players by the Edmonton Oilers . For the NHL team of the Oilers, the winger made his debut in the Stanley Cup finals of the 1986/87 season . The final series was won by the Oilers, so Buchberger won his first Stanley Cup in his rookie season. Three years later he won the cup for the second time with the Oilers. Although Edmonton won this 1987/88, but the attacker played this season mainly in their farm team , where he was on the ice for the Nova Scotia Oilers from the American Hockey League .

On June 25, 1999, the Canadian was selected in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers , leaving Edmonton as the last player to win a Stanley Cup with the Oilers . Shortly before the end of the trade deadline in March 2000 , Buchberger was handed over to the Los Angeles Kings , for whom he played until 2002. His last two positions as players were in the 2002/03 season , the Phoenix Coyotes and 2003/04 the Pittsburgh Penguins .

Immediately after the end of his career, Buchberger was assistant coach for the Edmonton Road Runners of the American Hockey League , the former farm team of his long-term employer, the Edmonton Oilers, in the 2004/05 season . After this season he was accepted into the management of the club as a development coach . During the 2007/08 season , Buchberger first worked as head coach when he missed the playoffs with the Springfield Falcons , Edmonton's AHL farm team. Nevertheless, he was accepted as an assistant coach in the coaching staff of the Edmonton Oilers before the 2008/09 season . He held this post until June 2014, when he relinquished the position of assistant coach to Craig Ramsay and is now responsible for player development himself.

For the 2017/18 season he switched from the Oilers to the New York Islanders as assistant coach , but was released after a year. Since the 2018/19 season he has been the head coach of the Tri-City Americans from the Western Hockey League .

For Canada , Buchberger took part in the 1993 , 1994 and 1996 World Championships . At the 1994 World Cup, Buchberger and his team were world champions, and vice-world champions in 1996.
