Career
Staios was selected in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the second round by the St. Louis Blues as a 27th player. In the following years, Staios had a relatively successful career in the Ontario Hockey League , where he played for the Niagara Falls Thunder and the Sudbury Wolves . Then Staios moved in 1993 to the International Hockey League , as from 1995 in the American Hockey League . In 1995, Steve Staios finally made his NHL debut for the Boston Bruins . After three years with the Vancouver Canucks , Staios was chosen by the newly formed Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft , which meant that he mostly played as a right winger . He was appointed captain of his new team . After two years in Atlanta, the Canadian joined the Edmonton Oilers . When the 2004/05 NHL season fell victim to a strike , Staios temporarily moved to the Swedish first division club Luleå HF .
Staios was part of the Oilers' squad when they lost the 2006 Stanley Cup final to the Carolina Hurricanes in their seventh game. With one goal and five assists , Staios was involved in the success of his team in the playoffs. On March 3, 2010, the Oilers transferred him to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Aaron Johnson and a third-round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft . After his contract expired at the end of the 2010/11 season , the defender was initially without a club before he was invited to the training camp of the New York Islanders in September 2011 , where Staios received a contract for the 2011/12 season a short time later . In July 2012, he declared his active career ended and was subsequently introduced to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the role of Player Development Advisor . There he was promoted to Manager of Player Development the following year before he also worked as an assistant coach for the Leafs in the 2014/15 season. In 2015 he moved to the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Ontario Hockey League, for which he was President for two years and has been General Manager since 2016.
