The 1999 NHL Expansion Draft took place on June 25, 1999 in Boston , Massachusetts . The Expansion Draft was organized because the Atlanta Thrashers opened a new franchise in the NHL ice hockey league and the team's roster had to be filled with players.

The rules

The Thrashers could choose a player from any existing team. With the exception of the Nashville Predators , who had just joined the league a year earlier. Each of the established teams was allowed to ban one goalkeeper, five defenders and nine attackers or two goalkeepers, three defenders and seven attackers from their roster so that they could not be selected by the Thrashers. The teams that had already lost a goalkeeper in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft (Anaheim, Los Angeles, Montreal, New Jersey and the New York Rangers) did not have to give up a goalkeeper this time.

The Thrashers could choose a total of 26 players, but had to include three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 13 attackers. The remaining two choices could be players of any position.

Draft result

Explanation: T = goalkeeper; V = defender; C = center forward; LF = left winger; RF = right winger.

For the sake of order, the players are numbered, but they do not have to be selected in that order. The order is not relevant as the Atlanta Thrashers were the only team in the 1999 Expansion Draft.
