The 1979 NHL Expansion Draft was held on June 13, 1979 by the National Hockey League . The draft had become necessary because the league before the 1979/80 season with the Edmonton Oilers , Hartford Whalers , Nordiques de Québec , and Winnipeg Jets after the World Hockey Association , to which these teams had previously belonged, at four Teams was expanded.

regulate

Reclaiming players: Since the rights of many WHA players were owned by NHL teams, they were able to bring their players back to prevent the four former WHA teams, which were to play in the NHL from the following season, from being pillaged by the To protect NHL teams, they were allowed to ban two goalkeepers and two field players each . The suspended players could not be reclaimed by the previous NHL teams. This choice was called "priority selections". With a few tricks, the four new franchises tried to keep their star players. For example, the Nordiques exchanged their first-round pick for the NHL Entry Draft for their star Réal Cloutier , whose rights actually belonged to the Chicago Black Hawks .

Since the rights to Edmonton star Wayne Gretzky did not belong to an NHL team, this should actually have been moved by the Oilers team to the Entry Draft, subject to the condition that they were allowed to vote as the last one of a round in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft Team then keep the eventual superstar.

Expansion Draft: Each of the 17 NHL teams was allowed to suspend 15 field players and two goalkeepers so that they were not available in the Expansion Draft and could not be selected by the new teams.

WHA Dispersal Draft

After the WHA season - but before the NHL franchises could reclaim players - the WHA franchises distributed the players to the remaining four teams who had not been eligible to play in the NHL due to their age.
