Pierre Renald Plante (born May 14, 1951 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 632 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , St. Louis Blues , Chicago Black during his playing career between 1968 and 1980 Hawks , New York Rangers and Nordiques de Québec played in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger .

Career

Plante spent his junior years between 1968 and 1971 with the Rangers de Drummondville in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , where he developed over the years into a balanced player with an offensive sense of the game and physical play on the defensive. In the 1969/70 season he collected 102 scorer points and was elected to the league's First All-Star team - although he was not among the top ten scorers in the league. In the summer of 1971, the winger was selected in the first round in the NHL Amateur Draft 1971 in ninth overall position by the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League .

Planned in the jersey of the St. Louis Blues

For the 1971/72 season , Plante finally switched to the professional field, where he did not succeed in the following year and a half to establish himself permanently in the NHL squad in Philadelphia. So he came again and again to the Richmond Robins in the American Hockey League , the Flyers farm team . In December 1972 they transferred him to the St. Louis Blues with Brent Hughes , while André Dupont and a third-round suffrage in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft went to Philadelphia. In St. Louis, Plante finally achieved the breakthrough and he was the unrestricted regular player of the Blues for the following four and a half seasons. Twice - in the 1973/74 and 1974/75 seasons  - he scored over 25 goals and 50 points scorer in one season. As a result, the winger's point yields decreased, so that he had become dispensable at the end of the 1976/77 season . Other players had now taken his place on the offensive. The Blues therefore transferred him to the Chicago Black Hawks in August 1977 in exchange for Dick Redmond .

With the move to Chicago, unsteady years began for Plante. Although he was used in 77 games, he only collected 28 points and therefore did not meet the expectations placed on him. A few days before his 27th birthday, he was therefore handed over from Chicago to the Minnesota North Stars in May 1978 . With that, the Black Hawks made up for a transfer that had been completed two months earlier and received Doug Hicks from the North Stars. However, the Canadian did not play a single game for Minnesota. Even before the start of the 1978/79 game year , Plante was put on the waiver list in September 1978 . There he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings , who did the same in October and Plante was part of the New York Rangers ' squad at the start of the season. In the Rangers, Plantes offensive skills were less in demand, and he could therefore devote himself to his defensive game. Still, he collected 31 points and was ultimately one of the key players responsible for New York reaching the finals of the 1979 Stanley Cup Playoffs . There they were subject to the Canadiens de Montréal .

Despite the success, the attacker's time in the Big Apple ” came to an end in June 1979. Since he was not protected by his team, the Nordiques de Québec , who had been accepted into the National Hockey League for the 1979/80 season , selected him in the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft . Plante completed his last NHL season there near his hometown. He ended his active career in the summer of 1980 at the age of 29.
