1973 NHL Amateur Draft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NHL Amateur Draft in 1973 , the annual talent contraction of the National Hockey League , was on 15 May 1973 at the Mount Royal Hotel in Canadian Montreal in the Province of Quebec instead.

A total of 168 players were drawn in twelve rounds, with only a few teams selecting players in the last four rounds. The overall first was Denis Potvin , whom the scouts previously trusted to succeed Bobby Orr , the league's best defender. Potvin lived up to expectations and was one of the top draft picks who managed to take a dominant leadership role on his team and set the team to win the Stanley Cup . Lanny McDonald , who was drawn in fourth place and also had a great NHL career, had a similar positive development .

Competition from the World Hockey Association

During this time, special attention was paid to competition from the World Hockey Association , which introduced the WHA Amateur Draft in 1973 . The league management of the NHL submitted its draft three days before the WHA was held, which gave the teams a small head start when it came to signing young talents. The NHL teams were able to sign all first-round picks before the WHA was able to do so.
