Stewart Randall "Randy" Holt (born January 15, 1953 in Pembroke , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 416 games for the Chicago Black Hawks , Cleveland Barons , Vancouver Canucks , Los in the course of his playing career between 1970 and 1984 Angeles Kings , Calgary Flames , Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of defender . Holt, who embodied the player type of the Enforcer , holds an NHL record since March 1979 with 67 penalty minutes received in one game . His older brother Gary was also active as a hockey player in the NHL.
Career
Holt first spent his junior years between 1970 and 1972 with the Niagara Falls Flyers in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) after starting the 1970/71 season with the Sudbury Cub-Wolves in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). For the season 1972/73, the defender moved within the OHA to the Sudbury Wolves , where he completed the game year as team captain . With 49 scorer points in 55 season games, he was able to add another element to his tough style of play as an enforcer . Since Holt's qualities were in great demand at the time, he was both in the NHL Amateur Draft 1973 in the third round in 45th place by the Chicago Black Hawks and in the WHA Amateur Draft in 1973 in the fourth round in 41st position by the New England Whalers selected from the World Hockey Association (WHA), which was then competing with the NHL .
The 20-year-old was signed by the Chicago Black Hawks after retiring from the junior age and immediately sent to their farm team , the Dallas Black Hawks , from the Central Hockey League (CHL). There the defender made it into the league's all-rookie team at the end of the season and also celebrated winning the Adams Cup with the Dallas Black Hawks . In the following three years, Holt was mainly part of the Dallas Black Hawks squad, but also got repeated assignments with the Chicago Black Hawks in the NHL. In total, he ran up to November 1973 42 times for Chicago before he was transferred to the Cleveland Barons in exchange for Reg Kerr . There the Canadian managed to assert himself for the first time in the NHL and thus belonged to the regular squad of the Barons until the end of the 1977/78 season . Since these einstellten playing mode after the end of the season, the guaranteed Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Dispersal Draft 1978 the services of the defensive player.
In Vancouver, however, Holt was not at home and after only 22 missions shortly before the turn of the year 1978/79 gave in exchange for Don Kozak to the Los Angeles Kings . They hoped that the commitment would strengthen the defensive. As part of the Los Angeles Kings he succeeded on March 11, 1979 in the game with the Philadelphia Flyers with 67 penalty minutes, which were composed of nine individual penalties, to set up an NHL record . Nevertheless, his time with the Californians ended in the summer of 1980 when he was handed over to the Calgary Flames together with Bert Wilson . Los Angeles received Garry Unger as compensation . With the Flames, however, Holt was not at home and so there was another transfer in November 1981 when he moved to the Washington Capitals with Bobby Gould , which in turn was Pat Ribble and a second-round vote in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft to Calgary. Holt's last stop was in the 1983/84 season with the Philadelphia Flyers, who had signed him as a free agent before the start of the season . After 26 appearances in the season, the 31-year-old ended his career in which he had collected 1,521 penalty minutes in 416 NHL games.
