Robert Alexander "Bobby" Gould (born September 2, 1957 in Petrolia , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and official who played 775 games for the Atlanta Flames , Calgary Flames in the course of his active career between 1975 and 1991 , Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the right winger position . Although Gould spent most of his career with the Washington Capitals, he celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Boston Bruins with reaching the final series of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1990 .

Career

After Gould had played in the 1974/75 season for the Petrolia Jets from his hometown Petrolia in Ontario , he moved to the United States in the summer of 1975 . Contrary to the usual practice of Canadian junior players to play in one of the leagues of the Canadian Hockey League , the winger decided to study at the University of New Hampshire . There he played in parallel for the university team, the Wildcats , in ECAC Hockey , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), until 1979 . During his time at the university, Gould continuously increased his point yield. Already in the NHL Amateur Draft 1977 he was in the seventh round in 118th place from the Atlanta Flames from the National Hockey League (NHL) and in the WHA Amateur Draft 1977 in the eighth round in 70th position from the Calgary Cowboys from this Time selected with the NHL Competing World Hockey Association (WHA). In his last NCAA game year he led the team as team captain on the ice and was appointed to the Second All-Star Team of the ECAC due to his achievements during the season. The Wildcats also won the ECAC championship.

Immediately after the end of the college season, Gould moved in the final stages of the 1978/79 season in the professional area and ran in five games for the Tulsa Oilers in the Central Hockey League (CHL). In the two following seasons he was then active for their league rivals Birmingham Bulls . He made his NHL debut for the Atlanta Flames in January 1980. However, it remained the only game for Atlanta, as the team moved to Calgary , Canada in June 1980 and continued playing there as the Calgary Flames . For Calgary he ran three times in the 1980/81 season , while he played in addition to inserts for Birmingham and for the Fort Worth Texans in the CHL. The change within the CHL was due to the dissolution of the Birmingham Bulls while the game was running. It was only at the beginning of the 1981/82 season that the striker managed to establish himself in Calgary's NHL squad, and he scored a hat trick on his second season appearance . The three goals, however, should be the only scorer points in the 16 games up to the end of November 1981. Then Gould was transferred to the Washington Capitals together with Randy Holt . In return, the Capitals sent Pat Ribble and a second-round vote in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft to what would later become the Olympic city.

The Canadian found a sporting home in the US state capital for almost eight years. He quickly developed into a high performer who was always good for 30 to 40 points per season in his role as a defensive striker. His best year was measured in points in the 1986/87 season , when he was directly involved in 50 goals. In the same year he took third place in the ranking for the Frank J. Selke Memorial Trophy ; He had already achieved the same in the 1982/83 season . Gould's successful time in Washington came to an end in September 1989 when he was transferred to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Alain Côté . With the original Six - franchise of offensive players spent his last season in the NHL, reached with the team during the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1990 but the final series for the Stanley Cup , against the Edmonton Oilers 2: went 4.

Before the 1990/91 season , Gould was sent to Boston's farm team Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he spent the season as a player and assistant coach under head coach Rick Bowness before he finally ended his active career in the summer of 1991 at the age of 33 and also resigned as a coach. Between 1997 and 1999 he worked again as an assistant coach and assistant general manager at the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) under head coach Mark Hunter , who was also born in Petrolia.
