August Bambula

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Bambula (* 1899 ; † 1985 ) was a Swiss activist of the homosexual movement of the 1930s.

Nothing is known about Bambula's origins, presumably he did not come from Zurich. According to a police report, he was an actor. He appeared for the first time in January 1932, together with Laura Thoma, as the author and publisher of the first Swiss gay and lesbian magazine, The Friendship Banner. In the same month he was mentioned as vice-president of the “Excentric Club Zurich” (ECZ), an association of gay men who, together with the “Amicitia women's club”, published the friendship banner and founded the first Swiss umbrella association of homosexual organizations, the Swiss Friendship Association . It is believed that he took over after the resignation of the previous ECZ President Ernst Feist.

Bambula acted as an author and publisher under the pseudonym Torrero. His writings were militant movement-political texts. Bambula withdrew from the friendship banner in October 1932, and in February 1934 he also resigned from the friendship association. In addition, only the year of death is known for Bambula.
