The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1990 began on April 4, 1990 and ended on May 24, 1990 with the Edmonton Oilers' 4-1 success over the Boston Bruins . The Oilers won their fifth title in the last seven years, but at the same time their last in franchise history (as of playoffs 2019). In addition, with their goalkeeper Bill Ranford they provided the Most Valuable Player, which was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy , and the two top scorers of the playoffs with Mark Messier and Craig Simpson . The Boston Bruins, on the other hand, suffered their fifth defeat in the final, most recently they were also defeated by the Edmonton Oilers (0: 4) in 1988.

With Edmonton's final victory, the Stanley Cup went to a Canadian team for the seventh time in a row, a series that was unmatched in the era after the major league expansion in 1967 and was ended by the Pittsburgh Penguins the following year . In addition to the five titles of the Oilers, the Canadiens de Montréal (1986) and the Calgary Flames (1989) were involved. The Philadelphia Flyers also missed the post-season for the first time since 1972 , ending the sixth-longest series of 17 consecutive playoffs at that time.

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Edmonton Oilers traditionally had a total of 46 people, including 24 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Scouts Harry Howell and Garnet Bailey were among the officials . For Bailey, it was the fifth mention on the Cup. After being engraved as Garnet Bailey in 1972 and G. Bailey in 1970, 1985 and 1987, he is immortalized that year as Ace Bailey. For the players, the rule was that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. The Oilers made no exception for Vladimír Růžička and Anatoli Semjonow , who could have made it to the Cup as the first Russian.

Edmonton's 24 players are made up of three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 13 attackers. There were four Europeans in the Oilers' squad . With Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Randy Gregg, Charlie Huddy, Jari Kurri, Kevin Lowe and Mark Messier, there were seven players in the squad who have played in all five of the Oilers' previous Stanley Cup victories. Seven officials also managed to be mentioned in all five cup victories. Jari Kurri was the first European to win the Stanley Cup five times.
