Gregory Norman Johnston (born January 14, 1965 in Barrie , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who was active in the National Hockey League and the German Ice Hockey League during his career .
Career
Greg Johnston began his playing career in 1981 with his hometown club, the Barrie Midget Colts . For the 1982/83 season he moved to the Toronto Marlboros in the Ontario Hockey League , where he was active until 1985. Before the start of the 1983/84 season , the Boston Bruins took him from the National Hockey League under contract, which had selected him in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in 42nd position. For Boston he played until 1990, which he used in the AHL in 1984/85 with the Hershey Bears , 1985/86 with the Moncton Golden Flames and from 1987 to 1990 with the Maine Mariners . From 1990 to 1992 Johnston played in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs , which let him accrue in the AHL in 1990/91 for the Newmarket Saints and 1991/92 for the St. John's Maple Leafs .
He moved to Germany in 1992 and initially stayed in the 2nd Bundesliga with ECD Iserlohn until 1994, until he was signed by the Kassel Huskies in 1994 and played in the German Ice Hockey League . The 1994/95 season was the first season after the founding of the DEL and the first season of the "Huskies" in the top German division. With them Johnston reached the German runner-up title in 1997.
To this day, the Canadian leads the Kassel team-internal scoring tables and received the nickname "Magic" Johnston through his goals and assists . By the then coach Hans Zach he was used both in attack and in defense.
For the 1999/2000 season he was lured away by the Berlin Capitals , for which he scored 120 scorer points in two seasons . When he wanted to try it in 2001 at MODO Hockey Örnsköldsvik in the Swedish Elitserien , he moved back to Germany after 13 games and ended his career with the Munich Barons that same season .
