Perry Edmund Berezan (born December 5, 1964 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 409 games for the Calgary Flames , Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks in the course of his playing career between 1983 and 1993 of the National Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

After Berezan had his junior years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League extremely successful behind, he was selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in the third round in 55th place by the Calgary Flames . The following two seasons 1983/84 and 1984/85 Berezan then played at the University of North Dakota in the National Collegiate Athletic Association before he was first used by the Flames in the NHL at the end of the second season . The Canadian left a lasting impression with five points in nine games and established himself in the team's regular squad in the following four years.

In March 1989, the Flames transferred the center together with Shane Churla to the Minnesota North Stars , who in exchange sent Brian MacLellan and a four-round pick in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft , with which Robert Reichel was later drawn, to Calgary. In Minnesota, Berezan stayed until his contract expired at the end of the 1990/91 season when the franchise moved to Dallas .

The following summer, the free agent signed a contract with the newly established San Jose Sharks franchise , where he ran the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons. At the end of the 1992/93 season, Berezan ended his career after 378 NHL games in which he scored 136 points. During his time in the NHL, he went from being a solid playmaker to a defensive-oriented striker. After retiring, he worked for two years at his alma mater , the University of North Dakota, as an assistant coach for the ice hockey team.
