Shane Churla (born June 24, 1965 in Fernie , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and scout , who played 566 games for the Hartford Whalers , Calgary Flames , Minnesota North Stars , Dallas during his active career between 1983 and 1997 Stars , Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Churla, who embodied the player type of the Enforcer , has been employed by the Canadiens de Montréal as Director of Amateur Scouting since summer 2016 .
Career
Churla, who acted on the position of the right winger, was initially active from 1983 to 1985 for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League . There he led the league in the 1984/85 season with 370 penalty minutes. Following this time the game was Enforcer at 1985 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round at a total of 110. Position of the Hartford Whalers selected. After he had spent the following season exclusively with the Binghamton Whalers in the American Hockey League , the Canadian played his first NHL games for the Hartford Whalers during the 1986/87 season . This transferred him in January 1988 together with Dana Murzyn in exchange for Neil Sheehy , Carey Wilson and the rights to Lane MacDonald to the Calgary Flames .
After a year in the organization of the Flames, the right-shooter was exchanged again, this time together with Perry Berezan for Brian MacLellan and a four-round vote in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft to the Minnesota North Stars . There he spent well over 200 minutes in the penalty box for four seasons in a row. During this time, Churla was selected in the 1991 NHL Dispersal Draft in first position by the San Jose Sharks , but was transferred back to the Minnesota North Stars a few days later. After the franchise was relocated to Dallas , Texas in 1993 , Churla went on hold for three more years for the team now known as Dallas Stars . Here he set up his career record in the 1993/94 season with 333 penalty minutes in 69 games of the regular season. After another transfer in the spring of 1996, the Enforcer acted briefly in the dress of the Los Angeles Kings before he was transferred to the New York Rangers a month later . There he let his active career fade away and ended his playing career in 1997.
Churla holds the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars franchise record for the most penalty minutes in the regular season (1883), as does that of the Binghamton Whalers (723).
After finishing his playing career Churla hit a career as a scout in the National Hockey League. He initially served in this role with the Phoenix Coyotes from 2000 to 2002 and 2003 to 2005 . He then held the same position in the Dallas Stars organization until 2013. For the 2013/14 season , the Canadian was hired by the Canadiens de Montréal and after three years promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting .
