The 1991 NHL Dispersal and Expansion Draft took place on May 30, 1991 via conference call under the direction of the North American Ice Hockey League National Hockey League . The drafts were held because the franchise of the San Jose Sharks , created by the increase in the NHL, had to be filled with players.

background

In 1990, the Minnesota North Stars' viewership fell sharply, so the team's owners, George and Gordon Gund , asked the NHL for approval to relocate the team to the San Francisco Bay Area . The NHL wanted to keep a franchise in Minnesota and refused to relocate. As a compromise, the NHL agreed to break up the 1978 Minnesota North Stars / Cleveland Barons merger.

The Cleveland Barons were relocated to San José , California , and opened as a new franchise under the name San Jose Sharks . For the most part, the roster of the Sharks was filled by players from the North Stars franchise by means of a dispersal draft , the roster was completed by players from the Expansion Draft , in which the North Stars also participated.

The Gunds became owners of the San Jose Sharks. The new owner of the Minnesota North Stars was Norman Green , who moved the team to Dallas in 1993 . The Cleveland Barons had existed as California Seals since 1967 before moving to Cleveland and later merging with the Minnesota North Stars. Basically, the San Jose Sharks are the successors to the Cleveland Barons.

Dispersal Draft : Before the draft, the Minnesota North Stars selected 14 outfield players and two goalkeepers from their roster who had played at least 50 games bythe end of the 1989/90 season . These players were not available in the draft. Of the remaining players from the North Stars organization, the San Jose Sharks were now allowed to select 14 field players and two goalkeepers, but no drafted players from the NHL Entry Draft 1990 with a valid contract. Up to three players could be drafted players without a contract.

After both teams had selected their 16 players, each team could take turns choosing a player from the remaining players.

Expansion Draft : The remaining 20 teams in the league could each select two goalkeepers and 16 field players from their team who were not available in the expansion draft. Alternately, both teams now chose a player until each team had ten players. A total of 20 players could be selected, but only one from each of the 20 teams.

Result of the dispersal draft

The San Jose Sharks selected 24 players from the Minnesota North Stars system, 15 of whom came to appearances for the Sharks in the NHL. The most significant commitment was the Latvian goalkeeper Artūrs Irbe .
