Career
Randy Gilhen was born in Germany but grew up in Winnipeg , Manitoba . He began his career as a hockey player in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League , in which he was active from 1979 to 1983 for the Saskatoon Blades and Winnipeg Warriors . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1982 in the sixth round as a total of 109th player by the Hartford Whalers , for which he was used in two games in the National Hockey League towards the end of the 1982/83 season . The following two years in the Hartford Whalers franchise , however, he spent with their farm teams Binghamton Whalers from the American Hockey League and Salt Lake Golden Eagles from the International Hockey League . On November 8, 1985, the winger signed a contract as a free agent with the Winnipeg Jets , but in his first three years in the franchise he was used almost exclusively for their farm teams Fort Wayne Komets from the IHL and the Sherbrooke Canadiens and Moncton Hawks from the AHL . It was not until the 1988/89 season that the Canadian was able to assert himself with the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL.
In June 1989 Gilhen was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins together with Jim Kyte and Andrew McBain in exchange for Randy Cunneyworth , Rick Tabaracci and Dave McLlwain , with whom he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in the 1990/91 season . The following three years of his career were marked by numerous changes within the NHL. He first played briefly for the Los Angeles Kings , then for a year across the seasons for the New York Rangers , and later for the Tampa Bay Lightning , his ex-team Winnipeg Jets and the Florida Panthers . From 1994 to 1996 Gilhen played a third time for the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL. When the franchise was relocated, he joined their successor team Manitoba Moose in the IHL for two more years before retiring at the age of 35.
