David "Dave" McLlwain (born June 9, 1967 in Seaforth , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 521 games in the National Hockey League and was later active for the Kölner Haie for nine years .
Career
Dave McLlwain's career began in 1984 in his native Ontario, where he, like his father Jack McLlwain, played for the Kitchener Rangers for two years and later for two more years for the North Bay Centennials in the Canadian Junior League OHL . The center , who always attracted attention in the junior league with good statistics, was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1986 by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 9th round at a total of 172nd position. In the 1986/87 season he was elected to the OHL's All-Star Team and played for Canada at the Junior World Championship. After the season, McLlwain was finally committed by the Penguins for two years, but frequently commuted between the NHL team and the farm team . However, the attacker played most of the games for the Penguins, but was finally transferred to the Winnipeg Jets at the beginning of the 1989/90 season , where he was consistently used in the professional team and even reached the play-offs in the first year .
In the 1991/92 season , McLlwain was exchanged several times. He started in Winnipeg, played most of the year for the New York Islanders , in between a few games for the Buffalo Sabers and the rest of the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs . After that it got a little quieter for McLlwain. Although he was transferred to Ottawa after another year in Toronto in 1993 , he played both that season for the Leafs and the two following years for the Senators as a regular in the NHL. During his third year with the Senators, however, the attacker was almost always on the ice on their farm team in Cleveland. Shortly before the end of the transfer, McLlwain moved back to Pittsburgh, where he spent the rest of the season including the playoffs.
After the Canadian played mainly in the minor league IHL for Cleveland in the 1996/97 season and only played 4 NHL games for the New York Islanders, he moved to Germany for EV Landshut . In his first European season, the striker, as in most of the stations in his career, convinced as a team player with an enormous overview and constant commitment. However, the Canadians left the DEL after just one season and went to SC Bern in the Swiss National League A . There McLlwain spent two very productive years, in which he collected significantly more points than he played games and was one of the best players in the league.
Due to his good performance in Switzerland, McLlwain recommended himself for a renewed engagement in the DEL, so that the Kölner Haie signed the now 33-year-old for the 2000/01 season . In the cathedral city, the Canadian asserted itself as a series one center and became German champions with the Haien in 2002 . In the years that followed, Dave McLlwain impressed mainly as a template provider, but also as an executor in the decisive games. In the years from 2003 to 2007 the center forward was invited to the DEL All-Star Game five times in a row . In the 2005/06 season McLlwain was together with the Düsseldorfer Tore Vikingstad the best scorer in the preliminary round and the best assists. In the 2006/07 season the Canadian was again the most successful scorer in the preliminary round and the best assists, whereupon he signed in November 2007 for another year in Cologne. On February 23, 2008, McLlwain was voted Cologne's Sportsman of the Year 2007 . In the 2007/2008 season he played his 500th DEL game with the Kölner Haien.
In the 2008/09 season, when things went very badly for the Haie, the 41-year-old McLlwain continued to be one of the most consistent players. He received an invitation for the sixth time for the All-Star game on January 31, 2009 in Berlin - this time he also led the North American team as captain. On March 1, 2009, he played the last game of his career in the 3: 4 defeat against ERC Ingolstadt .
