The German ice hockey cup was played annually for men from the 2002/03 season to the 2008/09 season based on the model of the DFB Cup in Germany. The cup round was carried out jointly by the German Ice Hockey League and the Ice Hockey Game Operating Company (ESBG) (with the German Ice Hockey Federation ). In the 1960s, 80s and 90s there were already several attempts to introduce such a competition, but this failed again and again due to the tight schedule of the professional clubs.

German men's ice hockey cup

The German Ice Hockey Cup was first played in 1968/69 . In 1984 and 1988 attempts were made to bridge the break during the Winter Olympics with a cup competition. Low spectator interest and difficulties in getting a team together without the national players who were released were reasons that no further cup competitions were held during this time. In 1996/97 the DEB League Cup was played once. The participants were the teams of the 1st ice hockey league 1996/97

From 2002/03 the clubs of the DEL and the 2nd Bundesliga as well as some clubs of the upper league took part in the cup, the latter usually played a qualification for the starting places in the preseason. The German Cup winner was played by the 32 teams in the knockout system .

In the 2008/09 season , eight four-way tournaments were held at ESBG venues as the preliminary round. Two (neighboring) representatives of the ESBG and two representatives of the DEL took part. The respective tournament winners qualified for the cup quarter-finals.

From 2005 on the abolition of the cup was discussed. The games of the DEL teams were usually not very well attended, there were also scheduling problems due to the games of the national team , the increase in the DEL and, from 2008, the Champions Hockey League . Due to the tight schedule due to the Olympic Games 2010 and the World Cup in their own country , the cup was suspended by the DEL for the 2009/10 season and has not been revived since.
