Kreios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kreios or Krios ( ancient Greek Κρεῖος Kreíos or ancient Greek Κριός Kriós , Latin Crius ) is one of the titans of Greek mythology , son of Gaia and Uranos .

He is the husband of Eurybia and thus, besides Iapetos, the only first generation Titan who does not take his own sister as his wife. With her he is the father of Astraios , Pallas and Perses .

It is believed that Kreios is a deity worshiped by the people of the Peloponnese until he was ousted by the Greek gods during the Doric migration . The probably original form Κριός suggests that it was a theriomorphic deity intended as a ram, who can be identified with Carneios . While on the one hand he was included in the genealogy of the Greek gods among the Titans by Hesiod, he was identified as Carneios with Apollo and continued to be worshiped.

myth

When his mother Gaia gave her sons the order to emasculate Uranos, he and his brothers Hyperion , Koios and Iapetos held their father together. Kronos then emasculated him with a sickle. Since Kreios kept his father in the south, he also became the titan of the south and the titan of the southern sky as well as the titan of the constellations.
