Phoibe and Asteria at the Pergamon Altar

Phoibe ( ancient Greek Φοίβη Phoíbē , German 'the shining one' , in older transcription also Phoebe ) is a titan of Greek mythology .

She is the daughter of Uranus and Gaia , the wife of the titan Koios and from this mother of Asteria and Leto and thus the grandmother of Apollon , Artemis and Hecate .

After Aeschylus , after Gaia and Themis, she was the owner of the oracle of Delphi , which she passed on to Apollo on the occasion of his birthday.

A representation of Phoibe can be found on the south frieze of the Pergamon Altar , where she pulls against the giants with a torch in her hand . She is accompanied by her daughter Asteria, who is holding a sword.
