The German Ice Hockey Cup was played for the first time by the German Ice Hockey Federation in the 1968/69 season. Participants were the teams from the Bundesliga and five teams from the major league. The EV Füssen was released because he was qualified as German champion for the European Cup competition. In view of the low participation of many teams, the competition was not held again until 1983/84 .
