The German Ice Hockey Cup was played for the seventh time in the 2008/09 season by the German Ice Hockey Association in cooperation with the German Ice Hockey League and the Ice Hockey Game Operating Company.

The competition began with the group stage on August 30 and 31, 2008, and the final took place on February 24, 2009.

mode

For the first time since the competition began, the first round of the cup was held as a group stage. Overall, the 16 DEL teams competed against each other in eight groups together with the 13 clubs of the 2nd Bundesliga and three top division clubs . Two DEL clubs were drawn into a group, plus two lower-class teams. Only the group winners reached the quarter-finals, which, like in previous years, were played in the knockout system . The clubs from the DEL only played against the two lower-class teams, so that in the event of a tie, the goal difference had to decide whether to win the group.
