The 1996/97 season, the first ice hockey league was the third season of the new second-highest German league and as in the previous year into two groups, the Northern Group and Southern Group , the official name of this season Hacker-Pschorr-League was , played out.

New to the league were EC Hannover , ES Weißwasser and SC Riessersee , who had left the German Ice Hockey League last year , as well as the promoted REV Bremerhaven , Grefrather EV , Königsborner EC , ERC Ingolstadt , ERC Sonthofen and EV Ravensburg .

As in the previous year, the preliminary round of the first division was played in two seasons. In the south, the Hacker-Pschorr-Liga , named after the league sponsor, the Hacker-Pschorr Brewery , was increased to 18 teams by both DEL relegated teams, while in the north the 1st Northern League was to be formed by 14 teams. However, due to the bankruptcy of ERC Westfalen Dortmund , there were only 13 teams.

In the Hacker-Pschorr League , the teams were divided into two relays, each of which played a single round, and there was also a single round of all participants. After a total of 50 games for each team, the participants in the play-offs for the German championship, the two participants in the Alpine Cup and the participants in the promotion play-offs for the Hacker-Pschorr-Liga 1997/98 were qualified against the qualifiers based on the final table Participants from the 2nd League South determined.

In the 1st League North , a main round was initially played as a single round, followed by a championship round of the top ten teams in the main round as a single round. The participants in the play-offs were determined on the basis of the final table of the championship round. The teams not taking part in the championship round took part in the qualifying round for the 1st division north 1997/98 against the qualified participants of the 2nd division north .

In the play-offs, the teams of both seasons played the German champions of the DEB leagues across the board.

Both the champions EHC Neuwied and the runner-up TSV Erding were qualified for the relegation round for the 1997/98 DEL season , but failed there because of the Ratinger Löwen and ESC Wedemark .
