The 2004/05 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga began on September 10, 2004 with 14 clubs and was organized by the ice hockey game operating company. New to the league were the Wölfe Freiburg , who had been relegated from the German ice hockey league , as well as the newly promoted Moskitos Essen and REV Bremerhaven . In addition, the Lausitzer Füchse moved up for the Spielbetriebs GmbH of EC Bad Nauheim , which was eliminated for financial reasons .

In addition to the reigning second division champions EHC Wolfsburg , who were accepted into the DEL , the SC Riessersee , which was banned from playing, the Heilbronner Falken , who had to compete in the league , the league was the fourth team to lose the Rote Teufel Bad Nauheim who ceased gaming operations due to the withdrawal of the sole shareholder.
