The 2002/03 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga was the fifth season of the new second highest German division and was originally intended to be increased to 16 players compared to the previous season . In fact, however, it only took place with 15 participants.
From the teams leaving the German Ice Hockey League after the 2001/02 season
- the mosquitos Essen waived the continuation of the game operations instead of the insolvent ESC Moskitos Trendsport GmbH in the area of the ESBG and took part in the fourth-class regional league NRW ;
- the Berlin Capitals could not meet the requirements for the license to continue gaming operations due to problems with the company that had left the DEL and later insolvented and was the holder of the DEL license and also took part in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord-Ost ;
- The Revierlöwen Oberhausen , who had left the DEL due to the lack of a stadium usage contract, had no parent club at the time of the departure that could have continued the possible game operation.

Attendees
After the champions REV Bremerhaven waived and only the ERC Ingolstadt as a play-off finalist took their chance to participate in the DEL , all participating teams from the previous year remained in the league due to the announced increase. The league was supplemented with the ESV Kaufbeuren and the EV Landshut , the two climbers from the upper league .
mode
The mode has been changed again compared to the previous season. After the preliminary round, which was played as a double round, the teams ranked 1 to 8 played the championship play-offs , after which the champions EHC Freiburg successfully applied for admission to the DEL 2003/04 . For the participants in places 9 to 11, the season ended after the preliminary round. In March 2003 , Tölzer Eissport GmbH, which organizes the Tölzer Löwen , filed for insolvency. The participants in positions 12 to 15 played in play-downs in play-off mode from two athletic relegated teams, including last year's champions REV Bremerhaven .
