The season 1968/69 of the ice hockey league was the eleventh season of the league as the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . While the champions ESV Kaufbeuren failed in the relegation round to the Bundesliga , the second-placed Cologne EK took third place in the relegation round West and thus took the Bundesliga place of Preussen Krefeld . Kaufbeuren moved to the Bundesliga after the dissolution of FC Bayern Munich .

The previous Oberliga participants SC Garmisch-Partenkirchen and SG Nürnberg, however, missed participation in the second highest division in the qualifying round for the Oberliga and were replaced by TuS Holzkirchen and ERC Westfalen Dortmund . Nuremberg moved up into the group south with the advancement of ESV Kaufbeuren. Since the Oberliga Süd was increased from six to eight teams in the following season , EV Ravensburg and EV Pfronten also rose to the Oberliga.

The other participants played a qualifying round in their respective group with the best of the corresponding regional league group , in the north the three best clubs in this round qualified for the following season, while due to the increase in the southern season to eight teams in the relegation round south the five best-placed teams qualified. In addition, the two group winners of the main round played for the title of league champions .
