The 1989/90 season of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey was the 17th season of the second highest German ice hockey division. Neither the champions of the two seasons, the ECD Sauerland and SV Bayreuth , nor the other participants in the relegation round made it to the Bundesliga at the end of the season .
After the bankruptcy of the 1st EHC Hamburg and the voluntary withdrawal of the ERC Westfalen Dortmund , the EC Bad Nauheim was finally determined as a relegated athlete to the league .

As in the previous season , the league was two-pronged, with both seasons starting with ten teams each. First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams in its group. The best four teams from both groups then took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga , while the remaining teams had to play for their starting place in the league in the relegation rounds in the north and south. The round was held in one group in the north and in two groups in the south.
