mode

As in the previous year, the participating teams first played a single round in their respective league, the Oberliga Nord or Oberliga Süd , so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. Unlike in the previous season, the best four instead of the best three clubs in the two groups took part in the qualifying matches with the participants in fourth and fifth place in the corresponding Bundesliga group .

The other participants played a qualifying round in their respective group with the best of the corresponding regional league group , but only the best three clubs in this round qualified for the following season, as both groups were to be downgraded to six teams each. In addition, the two group winners of the main round played for the title of league champions .
