The 1972/73 season of the ice hockey league was the 15th and last season of the league as the second highest German ice hockey league under the Bundesliga . The champions Cologne EC rose directly to the Bundesliga.

After this season, the 2nd Bundesliga was introduced. Eight league clubs and the two relegated teams from the Bundesliga qualified for the new second-highest division.

Attendees

During the preseason, the 1b of the Düsseldorfer EG had dissolved, so there was no relegation. After the Preussen Krefeld withdrew from the Bundesliga before the previous season, it was unclear whether there should be one relegated and thus two promoted players from the league or only one promoted. The DEB finally decided in a Solomonic manner that there should be no relegation from the Bundesliga but two promoted members ( Berlin ice skating club and EV Rosenheim ). The free places next to the regional league champion Duisburger SC were taken by Eintracht Frankfurt, EHC Stuttgart (in the previous year SG EHC) and TSV Peißenberg, while the third place in the regional league 1971/72, VER Selb , had renounced promotion.

The ice hockey department of the Cologne EK had made itself independent as the Cologne EC "Die Haie" .

As in the previous year, the league was played in a single track and in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams. The champions rose directly to the Bundesliga , the last two should be relegated to the regional league.

However, with the introduction of the new 2nd Bundesliga, the teams in places 2 to 9 and the two relegated teams from the Bundesliga qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga . The other teams, however, remained in the now two-part third-class league.
