The 1961/62 season of the ice hockey league was the fourth season of the league as the second-highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . The champions EV Landshut lost in the relegation games against the bottom of the Bundesliga, TuS Eintracht Dortmund , and thus remained in the top division. The last placed Berlin ice skating club , however, won the relegation against group league champion EV Pfronten .

The league was increased to twelve teams. As a result, the bottom of the table Cologne EK remained in the league, the EC Oberstdorf rose as second in the promotion round in addition to Eintracht Frankfurt , winner of the round.

As in the previous year, the participating teams played a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against all other teams. At the end of the season, the league champions had the chance to move up to the top division in a relegation round against the bottom of the Bundesliga . The last placed, however, had to play in a relegation round against the champions of the newly introduced group league for his place in the top division.
