The 1980/81 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga was the eighth season of the second-highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . Both the champions ERC Freiburg and the second-placed ERC from Schwenningen were promoted directly to the Bundesliga at the end of the season, their places were taken by the first division relegated Duisburger SC and EHC 70 Munich . The last place Herner EV , however, had the league dismount. The penultimate EHC Essen could have stayed in the league due to the division of the second division into a north and a south group, but voluntarily waived.

As in the previous year, the 2nd Bundesliga was played in the form of a simple double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams. Champion and runner-up directly in the Bundesliga , while the two last placed in the league had to dismount.
