The 2012/13 season was the 15th season since the founding of the new 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , the second highest league in German ice hockey . It began on September 21, 2012 and ends on March 17, 2013. It was also the last to bear this name. This year, for the first time, the champion received the 64 cm trophy, newly created by the Rosenheim family business "Mauritz Pokale", on which all the second division champions since the ESBG was founded in 2002 are engraved on the base.

Definition of participants
Since no team could be promoted to the DEL , but the league was supposed to start with an even number for economic reasons, the whereabouts of the relegated athlete was considered, temporarily discarded and decided after a shareholders' meeting of the ESBG on July 18, 2012.
Until the beginning of May 2012, first the league champions Tölzer Löwen and then the runner-up EV Duisburg had the opportunity to take 13th place in the league.
After completing the licensing process, at the end of June 2012 the current master from Landshut was initially refused the license due to a lack of a cooperation agreement between Spielbetriebs GmbH and the parent club.
The decision on the licensing of Landshut Cannibals was now at the DEB's court, as the decision-makers filed a lawsuit against the decision shortly after receiving the rejection. Regardless of whether the assessment of the cooperation agreement was formal, the Landshut Cannibals were also granted participation by resolution. In the same step, the league champion Tölzer Löwen was granted a provisional license to submit a guarantee of 225,000 euros. However, this requirement, and the fact that there are no funding license regulations for young players in the second Bundesliga, prompted those responsible in Bad Tölz to withdraw the application again.
Due to the decisions at the ESBG shareholders' meeting on July 18, 2012 and due to the additional problems that occurred during the renovation of the roof of the ice stadium in Dresden, which endangered the participation of the Dresden ice lions, those responsible at SC Riessersee and ESV Kaufbeuren considered their teams to withdraw from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga to the major league.
Mode changes
On September 16, 2012, five days before the start of the season, the representatives of the Bundesliga clubs decided to make some changes in the implementation regulations for the new season. The key point was the opening of the league for upper division players willing to advance in order to facilitate the general conditions for promotion from the season after next and thus achieve the desired league strength of 14 teams. Instead of a relegation round, two play-down rounds in the best-of-seven mode were originally planned. Due to the Hannover Indians filing for insolvency and the associated forced relegation of the club to the regional association, the playdowns were canceled at the end of February 2013.

Play-off
mode
The eight winners play in three rounds and in best-of-seven mode.
If the game ends with a draw after the regular playing time of 3 × 20 minutes, there is an extension of 20 minutes with four against four field players, but only until a goal is scored. The team that scores the goal is the winner with the corresponding result. If no goal is scored in extra time, a penalty shoot-out takes place immediately and without changing sides, with the exception of the last game of a play-off series, which is extended by 20 minutes until a goal is scored. In all games, the ice surface is "peeled dry" before the start of the penalty shootout.
Play-off tree
In the semifinals, the remaining best of the main round competes against the remaining worst placed in the main round and the remaining second best against the remaining second worst of the main round.
Play-off quarter-finals
The play-off quarterfinals were played in the best of seven mode and took place on March 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and, where necessary, on March 30 and April 1, 2013.

Play-downs
The four last-placed teams in the preliminary round were originally supposed to play a relegated team in the top division in two play-down rounds in the best-of-seven mode. The games were scheduled to take place between March 16 and April 13, 2013. After the Hanover Indians filed for bankruptcy on February 27, 2013 and the associated forced relegation, the play-downs were canceled because no other team had to relegate to the league.
Awards
Also this season, in cooperation between ESBG and the specialist magazine Eishockey NEWS, the best players of the 2nd Bundesliga were chosen by an expert committee consisting of coaches and managers from the second division. For the third time after 2009/10 and 2011/12, Jonathan Boutin by the Lausitzer Füchsen was voted best goalkeeper . In 41 games he achieved a goal average of 2.77. Dan Hacker was voted Player of the Year by the Schwenninger Wild Wings . With 29 goals and 40 assists, he was also the league's top scorer. The award took place during the 2nd gala of German ice hockey on March 16 in the Augsburg calf hall.
