As in the previous year, the ten teams played a single round, so that each club played one home and one away game against every other team. At the end of the season, the league champions had the chance to move up to the top division in a relegation round against the bottom of the Bundesliga . The bottom of the table should be relegated. Since the league was increased to twelve teams in the following season , there was no relegated team.

The champions of the national leagues played a climber in the league. As a result of the increase, not only the winner but also the runner-up rose.
