Attendees
Although in the preseason twelve teams played in the league, the Erding Jets had dismounted and the EC Wilhelmshaven-Stickhausen withdrew from the league, the league should be increased to 14 teams. Since there was also no promoted to the DEL, all four semi-finalists of the last league season were included.
mode
After the preliminary round, which was played as a double round, as in the previous year, the participants ranked 1 to 8 took part in the championship play-offs, from which REV Bremerhaven emerged as champions. Since Bremerhaven, as champions, waived the possible license application for the German Ice Hockey League , the application for admission to the DEL, made by the runner-up ERC Ingolstadt , was assessed positively. The participants in places 9 to 14 played off the relegated athletes after the preliminary round in the form of a relegation round.

The REV Bremerhaven did not exercise its right to be promoted to the German ice hockey league as champions of the 2nd Bundesliga due to economic deficits and an ice rink that was not suitable for DEL, so that the runner-up ERC Ingolstadt was accepted into the top German league after a successful license application.

Before the introduction of the DEL2 , the next placement criterion was the direct comparison in the event of a tie. The SC Riessersee therefore ended the season before the EC Bad Nauheim (15: 3 points in the encounters among themselves).
Due to the increase in the league, the relegated Regensburg and Duisburg were allowed to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga.
