Several former ice hockey clubs from the German coastal town of Wilhelmshaven are known under the name EC Wilhelmshaven , which are legally independent of each other, but can be seen as successor clubs in terms of organization and sport. With the EC Wilhelmshaven Friesland , the so far last club from Wilhelmshaven stopped playing between 2008. ECW Sande has continued the ice hockey tradition in Wilhelmshaven since 2016 .
history
In 1964, the Stickhausen ice sports club was founded in Stickhausen near Leer . From 1981 the club formed a syndicate with VfB Oldenburg . In 1986 the club's headquarters were relocated to Wilhelmshaven. There a syndicate was formed with PSV Wilhelmshaven, which in 1989 made it to the regional league for the first time . In the course of the rise, the ice hockey department of the PSV became the EC Wilhelmshaven-Stickhausen , which attracted up to 2,500 spectators to the Wilhelmshaven ice skating center in the following years.
From 1992 the EC Wilhelmshaven-Stickhausen took part in the game operations of the then third-class league , after its dissolution in 1994, the team was divided into the then second-class first division as part of the introduction of the new professional game class DEL . In 1999 it was promoted from the 1st division north to the now reintroduced 2nd division , in which the EC was able to hold up until 2001. Due to financial problems, the club finally withdrew to the regional league.
After EC Wilhelmshaven-Stickhausen went bankrupt , EC Wilhelmshaven "Die Jadehaie" was founded at short notice in 2002 to continue gaming operations. This was able to continue playing in the Regionalliga Nord. During the 2004/05 season , however, the new club had to file for bankruptcy on March 5, 2005 due to financial problems.
As the successor association, the EC Wilhelmshaven-Friesland eV was founded on March 7, 2005 , although the old association was still in bankruptcy proceedings. In Wilhelmshaven, this approach was justified primarily by the fact that this was the only way to maintain ongoing match and training operations, including the youth teams. For the 2006/07 season , the ECW refrained from participating in games with the senior team due to the unexplained hall situation and the high financial burdens when it moved to the Bremen ice stadium again. With the demolition of the ice rink in Wilhelmshaven in 2008, the club completely stopped playing.
On February 21, 2012 the initiative “Yes, to the new ice rink in Wilhelmshaven” was launched. The aim of the initiative is to build a new ice rink in Wilhelmshaven. In a signature campaign , 4194 signatures were collected and handed over to the mayor of the city, Andreas Wagner , on March 21, 2012 .
In 2015 an existing hall was converted into an ice rink in Sande at the gates of Wilhelmshaven. A planned resumption of play by the ECWF in the Landesliga Nord 2015/16 did not materialize. Instead, the newly founded ECW Sande took part in the Landesliga Nord in the 2016/17 season and rose in the following two years, first in the association and then in the regional league.
