In the 2004/05 season, the regional ice hockey league was heavily restructured. The leagues competed in the following system: the new joint Regionalliga Nordost , the Regionalliga NRW , the Regionalliga Hessen , the Baden-Württemberg-Liga and the Bayernliga .

The new Regionalliga Nordost (last season Regionalliga Nord or Ost) identified a joint promoted to the league. The Regionalliga NRW and Regionalliga Hessen also identified a joint promoter. However, the leagues were only interlinked after the separate main rounds. The Baden-Württemberg League and Bayern League each had a direct promotion place.
