The roots of Wedemärker ice hockey go back to 1975, when the ESC Wedemark was founded in Mellendorf . For the 1977/1978 season, a men's ice hockey team from Wedemark took part in the regional league north for the first time and became champions in the first game season. For the 1994/1995 season, the team was renamed Wedemark Wildcats . As a result of the promotion to the DEL , the professional team was outsourced in the 1996/1997 season to an association-independent GmbH and another name change to Wedemark Scorpions - the namesake was the band Scorpions, also from Hanover . Since the ice hockey team was now playing at national level, the rather unknown Wedemark was replaced by Hanover in the 1997/1998 season . In 2001 the Hannover Scorpions moved to the Preussag Arena (from 2005 TUI Arena) in Hannover . In 2004 club boss Jochen Haselbacher sold the GmbH to the new owner Günter Papenburg .

In 2008 u. a. by Jochen Haselbacher and Marco Stichnoth a new organization called ESC Wedemark Scorpions eV founded the predominantly youth development of the Hannover Scorpions should represent. The traditional Ice House in Mellendorf was deliberately chosen as the game and training venue. The cooperation between the Hannover Scorpions and the Wedemark Scorpions ended in 2010, the ESC Wedemark Scorpions eV remained as an independent association.

In the 2012/2013 season the ESC Wedemark Scorpions eV started for the first time with its own men's team in the Verbandsliga Nord, which they finished with third place in the table. Due to the decision of the Lower Saxony Ice Sports Association (NEV) to dissolve the association league for the coming season, promotion to the Ice Hockey Regionalliga Nord followed in the second season . The Wedemark Scorpions presented themselves as serious opponents early on . At the end of the 2013/2014 season, they again achieved third place in the table and thus qualified for the play-offs of the Regionalliga Nord. In an exciting semi-final against neighbors United North Stars (syndicate SC Langenhagen and EC Wedemark ) it was only in the penalty shoot-out after the 20th shooter that the team managed to win. The final against the EHC Wolfsburg won the Wedemark Scorpions , received the championship title of the Regionalliga Nord as well as the promotion to the upper league .

The decision that the team will actually play in the major league in the 2014/2015 season was announced to the club members at the annual general meeting on May 16, 2014. The long-time chairman Jochen Haselbacher managed the association's business. At the beginning of March 2017, the merger of the Oberliga team with the Hanover Scorpions was announced and that this "reunited" team would go into the race under the name Hanover Scorpions from the 2017/18 season. It was decided that the home games would be played in Wedemark. The most important people involved in this association were Eric Haselbacher, Kay Uplegger, Jochen Haselbacher and Marco Stichnoth. Eric and Jochen Haselbacher took over the sporting and business management of the newly founded company.

Youth work

The foundation stone of the ESC Wedemark Scorpions eV is the youth work. The club was founded in cooperation with the Hannover Scorpions in 2008 to train the offspring of the DEL team. At the same time as the formation of the first men's team in the 2012/2013 season, the ESC's student team also started in the regional league. After the first season, the Wedemark Young Scorpions won the championship title of the state league and thus rose to the Lower Saxony league. Just like the students, the boys' team also had an excellent first season in leagues.

Thanks to the intensive work with youngsters, the club managed to develop a sporting concept that is completely based on the youngsters. Outstanding juniors, who are formed in regular training camps such as the Eisbären Berlin , in Füssen or in Tyringe (Sweden), will support the Oberliga team from the 2014/2015 season. Individual players were invited by the DEB to the squad of the U-16 national team.

Cooperations

Thanks to the close ties between head coach Friedhelm Bögelsack and Eisbären Berlin , the ESC Wedemark Scorpions works very closely with Eisbären Juniors Berlin . A joint youth development program and regular training camps in the federal capital enable the young players to get the best possible training.

In the 2013/2014 season, the ESC entered into another cooperation agreement with the Hanover Indians . Young players from both teams played together as an independent team under the working title ELN , which originally stood for Ice Hockey Performance Center North . However, this designation was declared misleading by the Lower Saxony Ice Sports Association and was no longer allowed to be used. However, the cooperation ended by mutual agreement after only one season.

In October 2015, the two clubs ESC Wedemark Scorpions and Grizzlys Wolfsburg signed an agreement for the double licensing of junior players in order to give them the opportunity to play the school league or DNL2 North.

Other branches

figure skating

In addition to the ice hockey division, the ESC Wedemark Scorpions eV also has an extremely successful figure skating division, which on average completes around two to five competitions and two to four shows per season. In the 2013/2014 season the division was able to book a total of 30 first placements, 18 second placements and 3 third placements in competitions and championships.

At the Wedemark Sports Awards for 2013, ten figure skaters and one figure skater from the ESC Wedemark Scorpions were honored for their athletic achievements in the past sports year.

Venue

Ice House Mellendorf

Home of the ESC Wedemark Scorpions has always been the Ice House Mellendorf in Wedemark. With a total of 3800 seats (including 3400 standing and 400 seats) it is an ice rink with a long tradition. In 1974 the ice rink was built in the open air next to the outdoor swimming pool in Mellendorf, followed in 1977 by the roof and the first grandstand for 1200 spectators. Another expansion took place in 1995, in which u. a. the west stand was built as a balcony. Since the last renovation, the stadium can accommodate 3,800 spectators. In addition to a large number of cabins, the area now also includes a garage for the ice machine, an office with an integrated ticket shop, a catering area and a VIP room.

Club culture

The Wedemark Scorpions' club logo has been a red scorpion with a goalie mask since 1996. The Hanover Scorpions, which formerly emerged from the Wedemark Scorpions, received a new logo after their promotion to the DEL in 2004. For the establishment of the ESC Wedemark Scorpions eV in 2008 (as a youth club of the Hanover Scorpions) an identical logo was specially made, only the writing Hanover or ESC Wedemark differentiates the two logos.

Goal anthem

The current goal anthem is the song Rama Lama Ding Dong .
