The Free Academic Sports Club Siegmundshof Berlin e. V. , FASS Berlin for short , is a sports club from Berlin that is known for its ice hockey department . However, FASS was founded as a pure football club .

The FASS was founded as a sports club by and for students of the TU Berlin , the former founding members (including Lothar Voigt, Karl-Heinz Zappel, Helmut Orthmann and Hans-Erich Legler) named the club after their place of residence, the student residence in the street “Siegmunds Hof “In Berlin's Hansaviertel . Today's "beer cellar" at the Siegmunds Hof student dormitory can be identified as the place of foundation.

Today the club is behind the Eisbären and next to the ECC Preussen Juniors the most important ice hockey club in Berlin. The original football department is no longer maintained today.

history

The FASS was founded on December 17, 1962 and has had an ice hockey department since 1972. In 1974 the first FASS team moved to the Oberliga Nord . In 1975 the FASS regional league team and that of the EHC Nord Berlin merged to form the resurrected FC Preussen from Berlin , and the FASS team continued to play in the regional league north .

Behind the Berlin ice skating club and BFC Preussen and then later behind the BSC Preussen and the Berlin ice skating club, FASS was number 3 in the old West Berlin ice hockey, whose team participated in the Regionalliga Nord, the fourth highest division at the time, until 1993. After the league redistribution with the introduction of the DEL in 1994, FASS continued to play below the overarching league ice hockey and took part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord in 2000.

In 2004/05 , the club had three senior teams - the first team in the Regionalliga Ost - participating youth teams in all age groups. In the 05/06 season the first team played in the newly created Regionalliga Nord / Ost and, after an unfortunate preliminary round, took first place in the subsequent relegation , which meant ninth place in the overall ranking and entitled to participate again in the Regionalliga Nord / Ost.

In the 2006/07 season , the team played again in the Regionalliga North / East and finished seventh after 48 championship games. It was the longest season ever in the history of the Regionalliga as the game mode stipulated a triple round among the participating clubs. The 2007/08 season ended in the semi-finals of the playoffs when they lost to the Berlin league rivals ECC Preussen Juniors .

In the 2008/09 season , the first team in the Regionalliga Ost occupied seventh and last place in the table. Since no relegation was planned to increase the league, the team remained in the Regionalliga Ost. The national league team (1b), who were runner-up after beating Sport-Club Charlottenburg 4-7, and the juniors, who also took second place in the North German championship, were more successful this season. In addition, the juniors were also East German champions, which then entitled to the promotion games to the junior Bundesliga. The East German Championship was held in the course of the North German Championship, since only the Olympic Sports Club OSC competed from the "East". In promotion games to the Junior Bundesliga, however, they were defeated by the Ice Dragons from Herford at home with 4:10 and away with 2: 7.

In addition to the senior team of the ECC Preussen Juniors, the first FASS team plays in the third-class Oberliga Ost in the 2011/12 season . In addition, two more senior teams were registered for the game. One will compete in the Regionalliga Ost, the top division of the Saxon Ice Hockey Association, the other in the Landesliga Berlin . In addition, the youth teams are represented in all age groups.

The cooperation with the Eisbären Berlin , which had existed since 2007, was also continued. The aim of the cooperation is the expansion of the youth and school teams, which should be offered a bigger sporting perspective. The league team provides a kind of farm team in which young professionals can gain gaming experience in order to later be accepted into the EHC's DEL squad. In terms of sport, they have played in the upper third of the table since the 2010/11 season. After the concentration of the league in two seasons (north and south) FASS finished second in the season 2015/16 to 15th place in the North-season and had in the relegation round where the club finished last and therefore sportier relegated into the Regional League East was . However, after another league club resigned, FASS remained in this league.

In 2017 FASS retired to the regional league.

Venue

FASS Berlin has played its home games in the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion since 1972 . The “little pearl” has a capacity of 2800 spectators, which creates a cauldron atmosphere when the stadium is sold out. Around half of all seats are available for seating. The stadium is particularly characterized by its sometimes very narrow construction. A player on the way to the upper dressing room fills the entire width of the stairs and the large hockey bags do not fit through either. Since the grandstands go right up to the boards, the doors of the penalty and players' benches to the spectator area are usually locked. The only way to get to the players' benches is across the ice for coaches, supervisors and paramedics.
