The 1998/99 season of the 2nd ice hockey league was the first and last season of the league as the fourth highest ice hockey league under the DEL , the Bundesliga and the 1st league . After the season, the second division was replaced by the regional league as the fourth division.

Since there were too few teams interested in participating in the north, the planned reintroduction of the north group was dispensed with and the league was only played in the south. As part of the licensing process, the ESV Kaufbeuren was still able to meet the license requirements, which the ERC Sonthofen did not succeed, so that the league started with 13 participants.

After a preliminary round with 36 game days, the best six teams took part in the qualifying round for the new league , while the other teams played a relegation round. The last placed in this series had to defend his fourth division starting place in the relegation.
