The 1997/98 season of the 2nd ice hockey league was the fourth season of the new, third-highest German ice hockey division. The league was only played in the form of a group south , as in the north the teams interested in continuing the game were classified in the first division north due to a lack of sufficient clubs to carry out a group .

The ESV Königsbrunn and the Schwenninger ERC II had to relegate to the regional leagues .

First, a main round with 16 participants was played, at the end of which the teams ranked 1 to 8 participated in the qualifications for the Bundesliga , while the other participants moved into the relegation round with subsequent play-downs .

For the 1997/98 season, an extension with subsequent penalty shootouts was also introduced after the end of regular time. The winner after the regular season got three points, a win in extra time or the penalty shootout earned the club two points. The loser did not get a point after normal playing time, or a point if he lost in the penalty shootout or overtime.

The first placed in the main round south also played the championship of the second division with the best placed first division north team in the qualifying round for the Bundesliga.
