The 1964/65 season of the ice hockey group league was the fourth and final season of the third-highest German ice hockey league under this name. EV Rosenheim became the champion . By increasing the Bundesliga next Rosenheim also runner-rose EC Deilinghofen in the league on. The third-placed and last year's relegated Kölner EK , however, failed in the relegation games at Eintracht Frankfurt .

For the 1965/66 season , the group league was replaced by the regional league with four regional seasons. The descent from the group league was therefore omitted.

The league was topped up at short notice. This left the relegated in the south, SC Ziegelwies in the league. The relegated in the north, BFC Preussen, had secured the place in the league as a representative of Berlin through qualifying for the group league. The Augsburg EV was promoted in the south. Successors were the participants in the qualification and state league champions Mannheimer SC, Stuttgart ERC and Bremer ERG. In addition, the newly founded ERC Westfalen Dortmund was accepted into the league.

The preliminary round of the league was played on two tracks, with the North group starting with ten and the South group with nine teams. The round was played in the form of a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams in its group. The first two of the groups then played in a final round from the champions, who rose directly to the league together with the runner-up . The third had to rise to the top division in the relegation games against the bottom of the second division.

With the introduction of the regional league , relegation and qualifying games for promotion from the national leagues were eliminated.

Promotion to group league

The decisive third game was called off after a draw for 200 minutes.

After the league was increased, both teams were included in the now regional league. The remaining participants and games of the promotion round are not known.
