The ice hockey league was carried out as in the previous season in the form of a group south and a group north, whereby the group south should have been reduced to 12 teams and the group north should have been increased to 12 teams.

Before the start of the season

Before the season started, the following happened:

• From the southern group, the relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga South EC Oberstdorf withdrew to the leagues of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association - here the Bavarian State League - and was replaced by EV Pegnitz . Instead of EHC Stuttgart, which took part in the previous year , EV Stuttgart took part in the league.
• From the northern group, the original 12 teams of VfB Oldenburg , which could not agree with the hall operator about the costs for the ice ages, and EC Hannover , which was placed under bankruptcy administration, withdrew from the game operations, but with the Neusser SC found a successor. The possible advancement of SC Condor Hamburg to achieve the planned league strength was prevented by a successful appeal by Hamburger SV . The athletically qualified EC from Mainz had already renounced the possible promotion.

In the north group as in the south group, the preliminary round was carried out as a single round. The best six teams in the north took part in the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga North after the preliminary round , while the best eight teams in the south again took part in the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga South .

The other teams in the south took part in the relegation to the Oberliga Süd with the participants from the Regionalliga Süd 1984/85 .

Oberliga Nord

The participants in places 1 to 6 are qualified for relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga North . The ERC Westfalen Dortmund announced his team from the preliminary round to the schedule.
