The 1961/62 season of the ice hockey group league was the first season of the newly introduced third-highest German ice hockey league. The master EV Pfronten lost in the relegation games against the bottom of the second-rate league, the Berlin ice skating club , and thus remained in the group league .

Promotion and relegation between group leagues and national leagues were only decided at the beginning of the following season .

mode

The preliminary round was played in two regional single rounds with six teams each, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams in its group.

The first two of the two groups then played the champions and participants in the relegation games to the upper league in the final round . The promotion mode to the group league 1962/63 was not determined until the summer of 1962.

Attendees

The best teams in the national leagues qualified for the new league, with the exception of Eintracht Frankfurt (Hesse) and EC Oberstdorf (Bavaria), which qualified for or moved up to the top division . In the group group North , the Hamburger SC started as champions of the Landesliga Hamburg, the RESG Hanover as champions of the Landesliga Niedersachsen and the respective champions and runners-up of the regional leagues Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia were qualified. The group south consisted of the champions of the Landesliga Baden-Württemberg, and the teams in places two to six of the Landesliga Bayern.
