The Regionalliga season 1965/66 was the first season of the third tier under this name. The Regionalliga had replaced the previous group league. The champions of the regional league was the Augsburg EV , which rose to the league. The runner-up Cologne EK failed as in the previous year in the relegation to Eintracht Frankfurt . Due to the short-term division of the Oberliga 1966/67 into two regional groups, Cologne, like the Essen RSC and the Mannheim SC (after qualifying games against EC Hanover), moved up into the Oberliga.

mode

The 23 teams were divided into four regional groups. A single round was played in each group. The first three qualified for the intermediate round, which was played in two regional groups. Of these groups, the first two qualified for the final round, in which the promoted team and the participant in the relegation played off with the bottom of the league.

Attendees

In the group north, the Hastedter TSV Bremen replaced the ERG from Bremen. In addition, SC Brandenburg came from the Landesliga Berlin. Two representatives from Hessen were included in the South / West group: VERC Lauterbach and SC Frankfurt. The group south was filled with the first three of the Landesliga Bayern - the group was the only one to play with eight teams.
